There are primarily three ways to use essential oils!
- Gaining benefits from essential oils through the sense of smell (well the olfactory nerve) via oils wafting through the air. This supports a variety of areas including emotions, behavior, and memory.
- Diffuse with a diffuser, cotton ball on vent, oil pendent/ jewelry
- Inhale from cupped hands
- Inhale from oil bottle
- Spray bottle used with household items/ fabrics
- Essential Oils provide benefits via application to the skin. Essential oils are fats (lipids), as a result these oils can penetrate the skin and at a cellular level.
- It's important that you know to use a carrier oil* and that less is more (1-3 drops per dose). Oils can be applied on location (NOT - IN EARS, EYES, NOSE or other sensitive areas).
- Apply to areas of concern or reflex points (e.g. under nose, back of neck, behind ears, forehead, wrists, feet, ankles, spine.)
- Add warm compress, bath or massage to drive oils deeper
- Use roller/ spray bottles for quick access.
- *Carrier Oils - fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, etc...
- Taking essential oils internally is probably the most controversial. however, think about it, if you're eating fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and so many other plants you are consuming essential oils within the plant.
**If you're unsure of the purity of your oil or it has a warning - DO NOT take it internally.**
You also need to know if a specific oil is good for internal use - please check for a supplement label. No supplement label no internal use. For example some oils (like wintergreen) are not for internal use, but others (like peppermint or lemon) can be used.
- put a few drops of oil in a veggie cap
- put a drop under the tongue
- add when cooking - start with a drop or less
- put in a glass (made of glass or stainless steel) of water or other liquid
